How Great is Our God

The following is an article that I wrote for a news letter a while back, but this being the Christmas season I thought it very appropriate. I hope you enjoy it and that most of all it makes you question yourself.

"How Great is our God" music and lyrics by Chris Tomlin

" The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty,
let all the world rejoice, let all the world rejoice,

He wraps Himself in light, and darkness tries to hide,
and trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice,

chorus:
How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God,
and all will see, how great, how great, is our God.

Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
beginning and the end, beginning and the end,

-chorus-

The Godhead 3 in 1; Father, Spirit, and Son,
The Lion and the lamb, the Lion and the lamb
Name above all names, worthy of our praise
Let every heart rejoice, let every heart rejoice

-chorus-

This is probably one of my all time fave worship songs. The entire thing, the words, the music, all of it, exemplifies the way I feel about my God.
When I sing it I feel as if I am declaring with all my soul, to God, and to all of those around me, just how great He has been in my life and how great I know He will continue to be.

Webster's dictionary defines the word "great" as: remarkable in magnitude, degree, and effectiveness; remarkably skilled.

But do we really believe that God is great? Or do we, like most people, keep Him contained and compartmentalized in our minds and hearts to just those areas that we allow Him to be great in?

What if we changed the title of the song from the declaration of : "How Great is Our God" to the question: "How Great IS our God?" That shakes things up a little, doesn't it? Then we would have to ask ourselves -"Is He so completely involved in every area of my life that there isn't a place that He doesn't inhabit? Do I truly allow Him access to every part of my life? My marriage? My finances? My job? My children? What about my leisure time? Do I honestly believe God is great in EVERY part of my life?"

We need to remind ourselves from time to time of the GREATNESS of God; not just of what He IS but of what we are letting Him be, in us.
So the next time you hear this song, may it not just be a declaration of your soul but a question in your mind.
